When you walk into a regular group exercise class, the setting is impersonal. The 85 year old man with bad knees is right next to the 24 year old former collegiate volleyball player, who is next to the new mom that is just returning to fitness after over two years away. In order to meet all these separate needs, the exercises are general, non-specific, and boring. The instructor stands at the front and calls out instructions while everyone tries to follow along. Because the instructor is also demonstrating and participating in the workout, there is little attention on individual form, technique, or progressions and modifications. Classes tend to be crowded, loud, and generally ineffective because of the lack of personal detail and attention.
At Shaffer Elite Fitness, we think differently about “Group Fitness.” Here, groups are structured to fit a similar training desire, whether it be beginning fitness, athletic performance, or more, so you know you are in a group that meets your needs. I pay close attention to each individual and make sure you are completing the exercise correctly. I will also suggest modifications and progressions as necessary
Glory Days Group – I hear it all the time from clients, “When I was in high school, I was in the best shape of my life.” “When I was in college…” “When I played [enter sport]…” We all love to sit around and reminisce about when we were in our prime. This group, however, is for the guys and gals that want to test their mettle and push themselves to not only relive those experiences but to even surpass them and create a new “best shape of my life” phase. We do a lot of conditioning, targeted strength, functional mobility, competitions, and more. Come out and relive your glory days with us!
Running Strength Group – Runners ask me all the time how I feel about strength training? Is it something they need to include in their training? My response is usually along the lines of, “Do you want to run faster, longer and more efficiently, or not?” The benefits of strength training for runners are numerous, including injury prevention, better running economy, and increased leg speed, among many, many more. In this class, we will target running specific exercises and muscle groups. This is the class for people that want to take their running to the next level!
Getting Started (Again?) Group – Are you new to exercise? Or maybe you used to work out but now you are ready to start again? Let’s face it, we all know that we should be “working out” more, but figuring out where to start, what to do, and how to do it can be a daunting task. Gyms can be intimidating, and the vast amount of fitness information can be overwhelming. This group is perfect for anyone that is ready to begin their fitness journey in a fun, supportive, and structured environment. By focusing on proper form and technique, pertinent exercise selection, and tons of support, you will achieve a great workout and build your confidence, all while having a great time!
Total “Buddy” Workout Group – Exercise is way more fun when you do it with friends, so bring a buddy (or come alone and I will pair you up) for a fun, full body workout. We’ll hit the legs, the arms, the chest and the back – along with a generous helping of core – to make sure that everyone gets a great workout. This class is designed to challenge participants, but in a positive, fun environment full of teamwork and camaraderie. When we press toward our goals together, everybody wins
